Unity ‘08?
This new Unity ‘08 campaign has the potential to be either a gift or a disaster. The Unity ‘08 movement is attempting to foster a relationship between a Democrat and a Republican canditate so they will run together on one ticket. The thought behind this is that this will end partisan bickering in the Congress and bring the nation together, sounds naïve but very nice on paper. A perfect ticket would have a fiscally responsible Democrat (good luck) and a socially liberal Republican (snowball in hell). The worst-case scenario would give us a tax-and-spend Democrat and socially conservative Republican, or more of what we have in Congress right now.
Most Americans are pro-choice and dislike paying exorbitant taxes, most Americans are sick of this wasteful and poorly planned war (the number is at 70% right now). Most Americas are not against stem-cell research and know that the separation of Church and State is a basic pillar of our democracy, without which our democracy would most certainly collapse. So why is it, that when it comes to election day, people that do not have our best interests at heart keep getting elected? Politicians insist on preying on our most basic security fears, our irrational dislike of outsourcing, and our newfound hatred for immigrants. The last guy to make a big deal out of foreigners taking national jobs went by the name of Hitler, and look at what that lead to. Those who chose to ignore history, repeat it at their own costs and pay a hefty price for it. This election is shaping up to be another media extravaganza, rich in flash, poor in content.
